Ghana community centre appeal by town opticians
AN opticians is appealing to Hinckley residents to support a new fundraising project in the Ashanti region of Ghana.
The team at Specsavers in Castle Street has been supporting the Ashanti Development since 2010, organising several visits to Ghana to provide much needed eyecare and distribute donated glasses to people in many of the country’s remote villages.
Abhijit Roy, the store manager, said: ‘We’ve set a fundraising target of £12,000 to build a community centre and clinic with the aim of further improv- ing healthcare services for villagers.
“This new project will continue the positive work that has already benefitted hundreds of people in the Ashanti region.
“During our last visit in October, we distributed nearly 3,500 pairs of specs and performed 250 tests every day on average. People would queue for hours to wait for treatment.
“In the past seven years, we have worked hard to raise money to improve sanitation, hygiene training and healthcare, as well as funding a kindergarten to give local children the opportunity to receive a good education.
“All of this wouldn’t be possible without the support of our local community.”
The Ashanti Development is a charity run by volunteers working to make a difference for some of Ghana’s poorest people. To find out more about the charity, visit: http://ashantidevelopment.org/.
