Car spending high in region

HOUSEHOLDS in East Midlands are spending more on their cars than than most people in the country.

People in the region spent an average of £68.70 a week on their cars between March 2014 and March 2016.

The figure includes purchase of vehicles, fuel and motor oils, accessorie­s, annual insurance, repairs and servicing.

Most of the money had been spent in purchasing vehicles (£27.30), while the second highest expenditur­e was for petrol, diesel and other motor oils (£22.40).

People in East Midlands are also more likely to buy second-hand cars or vans than anyone else in the country except for South West and South East. East Midlands households were among those who spent the most on car insurance, at £9.40 per week.

Households in the UK spent an average of £66 on their cars per week, £0.70 more than 2013-2015.

Purchase of vehicles is the main source of expenditur­e at an average of £23.60 per week for each household, of which £13.90 is for secondhand­s cars or vans, £8.70 for new vehicles and £1.00 for motorcycle­s and other vehicles.

London households spent the least on motoring, at an average of £49.00 a week.
