Golden day for karate school

TEN members of the Simon Coope Karate School, who attend sessions at Hinckley Leisure Centre and Holy Trinity Church hall, competed in the KSE 10 (Karate –Do Shito Ryu England) in Gloucester.

Emily Wardle performed well in the first round of the under 9’s Kata but went on to meet the eventual winner and lost 2-1 on flags.

Ryan Ford struck gold in the 3rd Kyu and above, for 5-9 years fighting,

Kyle MacKay also claimed gold in the 10–11 years brown belt and above section, conceding only one point on his way to victory.

And his brother Luke MacKay made it a golden double for the family, fighting in the 14–15 years male section, winning 3-0 in the final.

Adithya Kunigiri and Tyler Hames both fought in the 12–13 years male section.

Kunigiri dominated his first fight but lost 2-1 on flags, a result which mystified his fellow team members.

Hames won his first fight 8-0 in 44 seconds but went on to lose 4-0 to the eventual silver medallist.

Ankitha Kunigiri and Carys Jones fought in the 12-13 years girls section, with Kunigiri winning her first fight 4-0 but losing 1-0 in the next round.

Jones had a bye in the first round, won the second round 8-0, won the semi-final 2-0 and claimed a 3-0 victory in the final, scoring 13 points without conceding a point.

Competitio­n newcomer Rachel Martin came fourth in the 15-17 years Kata event but lost in the first round in the 16-17 yrs female section.

Libby Davies fought in the 15-17 years ladies Blackbelt Kata event, going through to take bronze, a result she repeated in the 16-17 years female fighting section.

In the team events, Luke MacKay and Libby Davies came away with silver as did Tyler Hames, Carys Jones and Adithya Kunigiri in the 12-13 section.
