Robot Wars family suffer series defeat

-

VICTORY eluded a Hinckley family who fought in the latest round of cult TV show Robot Wars.

The Denny’s - dad John D, wife Cath, son John M and daughter Tasha - featured on BBC2 series with their pink and black liveried crasher and basher, Heavy Metal.

Designed by dad, Mira worker John D, and driven by son John M, the hardened steel monster with its 360-degree rotating weapon was put through its paces in three combat trials during the programme.

After emerging damaged but determined from the first round, Heavy Metal was pitted against a trio of individual opponents.

But despite the best efforts of driver John and the sawing and grabbing steel beast, they failed to make it through.

An initial success gave way to defeats at the hands of robot Concussion with its rotating drum and Thor, a powerful axe robot.

Dad, John said: “We were next to the Concussion team in the pits and got on well with them but in the arena there is no compromise and we both went full on at each other.

“Unfortunately our tyre studs started coming off and our wheels just kept spinning. We were going nowhere which left us at the mercy of Concussion.

“We took a direct hit on one of our wheels, completely shearing our axle and sending the wheel into the air and out of the arena - a spectacular way to lose the match.

“Our final fight of the three was against number three seeded Thor, an axe robot with incredible power.

“Again we were friends with the driver but there was no let up and we both got stuck in .

“Unfortunately our robot was suffering from the damage in the previous fights and the tyre studs were all over the place.

“We put up a good fight...but Thor hit us really hard, bending the axle on the other side of the weak, damaged one.

““We got wedged between house robot Matilda and Thor, breaking the repaired axle again.

Shrugging off the disappointment the Robot Wars veterans, , are already planning a successor to Heavy Metal for next series.
