Litter pickers shocked by ‘mountain’ of poo bags

-

FOURTEEN volunteer litter pickers collected 15 bags of rubbish in a single day.

They were taking part in a Great British Spring Clean tidyup on the outskirts of Hinckley and were stunned at the volume and types of rubbish they tidied up.

A tyre, scrap metal, car wheel trims and what was described as a ‘mountain’ of filled dog poo bags, were picked up along Leicester Road towards the roundabout and from parts of Burbage Common.

Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Councillor Jan Kirby (Con, DeMontfort) joined members of Leicester Road Residents’ Group and other volunteers on the clean-up campaign.

She said: “A big thank you to all the volunteers who turned out.”

But she added: “I was annoyed that only one day had passed and there was another load of rubbish.

“Vehicles driving past just throw it out of their windows. “We will keep persevering. “We won’t give up trying to make our borough a place to be proud of.”

Litter picks are being organised around the borough as part of the Great British Spring Clean.

Market Bosworth, Carlton, Earl Shilton and Thornton and Bagworth have already held clean-up events.

Others are planned in Norton Juxta, Twycross, on April 6 (10am start) where volunteers will be welcome.

Other groups planning private events include Tesco, McDonalds, Desford Cubs, Hinckley Scouts and Dorothy Goodman School.

All the events are being supported by Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council whose street cleaning team has been making special collections of the scores of bags of rubbish filled during the campaign.
