Tree warden volunteers will play vital role preserving village’s green heritage
PRESERVING the green heritage of Stoke Golding is part of a voluntary position being advertised through the parish council.
Applications are welcomed from anyone who wants to offer some spare time to fulfil the obligations of a tree warden.
Wardens are common in around 118 parishes across Leicestershire and play a vital role.
They are supported by the Tree Council and Leicestershire County Council with information, advice and courses.
A spokesman for the parish council said: “The role of tree warden is very much what people wish to make it and also depends on how much time they have to give to projects. Often wardens will undertake such activities as compiling a list of protected trees and their locations, looking out for other trees which might be eligible for protected status, suggesting areas where more trees could be planted and working with schools and community groups on various treerelated projects.”
Wardens are not expected to undertake tree surgeon work or responsibilities, such as advising whether a tree is safe or not or carrying out maintenance. Wardens also don’t handle tree disputes or enter land without permission.
The spokesman added: “Initial information from the recent neighbourhood plan consultation events has already demonstrated the community really values the green and wooded environments of the village and surrounding countryside. We are asking people to consider, as an individual, or as a group, about becoming a tree warden and helping to protect and enhance this environmental benefit for all.”
