Stenson hits four in record win for Leicester Road FC

-

HINCKLEY’S Leicester Road Football Club recorded their biggest ever home victory with an 11-0 demolition of bottom of the table Southam United.

Although the Banbury-based side battled throughout the 90 minutes, Leicester Road were far too strong for the basement team and coasted to an easy victory.

The writing was on the wall for Southam after just seven minutes when Joseph Lyne probing down the wing cut back unselfishly for Matty Stenson to open the scoring. And just five minutes later a pinpoint cross from skipper Greg Downes allowed Stenson to grab his second of the day with a great header.

The Leicester Road No. 9 was on fire and already looking for his hat-trick and on 25 minutes some quick thinking from LRFC keeper Will Highland released the ball through to Stenson again and he waltzed through the Southam defence to make it 3-0

It was all one way traffic, with Southam not having a lot to show for themselves, and on 37 minutes Stenson was again in the thick of the action - being brought down in the box and then converting the penalty himself for his fourth of the day.

LRFC weren’t done however and continued to pour forward - and on 43 minutes Jake Holt went around the keeper and calmly slotted home to make it 5-0 at half time.

Early in the second half, LRFC manager Neil Lyne made a couple of substitutions to give others in the squad a run out (on 52 minutes defender Callum Earls was replaced by Josh Smith and on 60 minutes star striker Stenson was replaced by Amarvir Sandhu) and this gave LRFC further attacking options. Although Southam tried to press for a goal of their own, the home team were again too strong and scored five further goals all within 14 minutes.

On 66 minutes Amarvir Sandhu pulled one back from the by-line and Billy Bennett smashed home Leicester Road’s sixth of the afternoon, then on 71 minutes Joseph Lyne unselfishly squared in the box for Tom McGlinchy to roll home his first of the afternoon.

Lyne then made way for fellow midfielder Sam Munton and on 78 minutes he cleverly set up McGlinchy for his second, skilfully rounding the Southam keeper and finishing from a very tight angle to make it 8-0. Then just a minute later came the second hat-trick of the afternoon, with a sublime assist from Bennett allowing McGlinchy to make it 9-0 LRFC.

On 82 minutes Sandhu dribbled past three defenders to shoot past a helpless keeper and three minutes later he was slid in by McGlinchy to hit his second of the afternoon to finish the scoring.
