Honours even when A meets B to conclude campaign

-

THERE have been some up and down performances from the two Hinckley sides in the Midland Veterans League Division 2 table tennis this season.

Local rivals Nuneaton are currently undefeated and lead the table on 18 points while Hinckley A currently sit in fifth place with the B team in last with just four points.

The B team picked up a useful draw against Birmingham C, Charlie Bateman winning two for the town, with both Russ Pettitt and Dave Daniels one each plus the doubles for the draw. Matt Satchwell was unbeaten for Birmingham.

Hinckley A recorded a fine 6-4 victory over Leamington C, mainly due to an impressive maximum from Alex Mason. In their clash with local rivals Nuneaton the A team went very close just losing 6-4, Nuneaton’s Mick Allsop starring, with three victories and Jason Woodfield taking two wins for the Town.

The A team then suffered another defeat to Stafford again losing 6-4, both Pete Jamieson and Jason Woodfield collecting two wins apiece.

Hinckley B were on the wrong end of a heavy defeat at the hands of Derby A losing 8-2.

In their final game the two town teams clashed at Caterpillar. In a close match the A team led 4-3 with three sets to play but the B team hit back with wins by both Russ Pettitt and Charlie Bateman to go 5-3 up with just a doubles to play. Alex Mason and Pete Jamieson (both A team) took the doubles to secure a draw.

Hinckley A finish with 13 points in fifth place in the table and the B team finish with five points in last position. Jason Woodfield finishing fourth in the averages with 73 per cent.

In the Handicap Team Challenge competition between the second placed team in Division 1 and the second placed team in Division 2, was a close affair no fewer than four games going to the wire 31-29. The home team Barwell George Ward E started well with Dave Richardson beating Barlestone’s Russ Pettitt, however, with both Adam Pettitt and Charlie Bateman in good form both winning their three, there was only ever going to be one winning team at that was Barlestone A taking the match 6-3 to progress to the next stage.
