Lorry and car collide at busy A5 junction

- MATT LLOYD matt.lloyd@trinitymirror.com

THIS is the shocking moment anHGV and a small car came to blows attempting to join a busy dual carriageway near Magna Park.

Recorded on the dashcam of a following driver, both vehicles come to the junction of Shackleton Way and Coventry Road.

Although a single-lane junction, the blue Toyota pulls alongside the lorry as both attempt to join Coventry Road.

As the lorry turns it collides with the car smashing the rear window and dragging the smaller vehicle along the road.

It is unknown if any injuries were sustained in the smash which was uploaded to the internet in February.

The campaign group Magna Park is Big Enough shared the video on their Facebook page with the comment: “The joy of motoring around Magna Park!”

Maggie Pankhurst, a member of the group which is fighting expansion plans at the distribu- tion hub, said roads around Magna Park were too congested for the volume of traffic now flooding the area.

She said: “The problem with the A5 already is it’s not fit for purpose and doesn’t take the volume of traffic there is already.”

With further expansions of the site planned, Maggie said even more traffic would be using the roads in the area.

She said: “They’re going to put a lot more traffic on there and bigger lorries coming and going at all hours of the day.

“They are talking about 10,000 new employees so work out how many more car movements that is.”

In March, Magna Park is Big Enough called on expansion of the distribution hub to be curbed until road infrastructure was upgraded to handle increased traffic volume.

They were responding to a report set out in the Midlands Connect Strategy setting out the timetable to improve roads in the area.

In it an estimated completion date for phase one, improving the roads between the A5, A38 and M1, was 2030.

Responding, MPisBE said: “The 15-mile stretch between the M69 and the M1 is completely inadequate to meet the current demands and the extensive business and residential development planned alongside will just add more traffic volume, congestion, pollution, and safety risks.”
