Table tennis round-up

QUEEN’S B maintained their lead in Division Two of the table tennis league but found life more of a struggle in the last round of matches than they might have expected, writes Mike Holt.

They dropped three sets to George Ward D finally winning seven sets to three. In their next match they met second placed George Ward E and found life uncomforta­ble against the ever improving youngsters, despite fielding arguably their strongest team.

Dave Richardson and Edward Brown (GWE) both collecting maximums and with Frankie Hallam (GWE) with one win the league leaders were beaten by three sets to seven.

Queen’s B final match saw them clinch the championsh­ip with a seven sets to two win over Cat G.

GWE had a real fight on their hands when they played thirdplace­d Barlestone C, racing into a five sets to two lead only to see Barlestone fight back picking up the next three sets to claim the draw. For GWE Dave Richardson won three and Edward Brown two while for Barlestone Alex Westerby took two wins.

Barlestone C comfortabl­y won both their remaining fixtures firstly defeating Cat G by 10 sets to nil and then seeing off GW C by eight sets to two, to claim third spot in the league.

At the other end of the table Cat E and GWD both close to the bottom met with Cat E needing to win to ensure they finished above GWD in the end it was close, the final score being a draw five sets apiece. Young Jack Dennis won all three of his matches for the first time.

This draw sees GWD finish third from bottom on 55 pts with Cat E also on 55 points finishing bottom but one on points difference only.

Dave Richardson took the honours as leading player in the averages with 91.49%. League Chamipons Queen’s B finished on 128points, GWE second on 117 points and Barlestone C third with 113 points.
