Woman bailed in baby death case
A WOMAN arrested on suspicion of concealing the birth of a baby found dead in a bag has been questioned and released on bail by detectives.
The 27-year-old was arrested following the discovery at Stoney Farm, Broughton Road in Stoney Stanton on April 30
She was initially arrested with concealing a birth and taken to hospital for treatment.
She has since been discharged with Leicester- shire Police confirming she had also been arrested on suspicion of a second offence which could not be disclosed for operational reasons.
The force did say the second suspected offence was in connection to the death of the infant.
A statement on the force’s website said: “The investigation is continuing as officers work to establish the full circumstances.
“An initial post-mortem examination was completed on Monday (May 1) and further tests are now due to be conducted to determine the cause of death.
“A 27-year-old woman was initially arrested on suspicion of concealing a birth and has been receiving the appropriate medical treatment in hospital.
“She has since been discharged and also arrested in connection with the death of the baby.”
Following the discovery, residents in the village spoke of their shock.
Speaking to our sister paper the Leicester Mercury, one said: “I’ve lived here 64 years and I’ve never seen anything like this.
“I felt shocked when I heard what had happened.”
The Rev Sharon Constable, rector of Broughton Astley and Croft with Stoney Stanton, said: “Whatever has happened, our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this time and with all those involved.”
