Choice in faith always gets desired results

- With Rev Helena Whittaker, Associate Priest, St Mary’s Church, Hinckley

A COUPLE of weeks ago many of us watched the response of Barbara from Bristol, giving her reaction to the news of another General Election.

She was decidedly not impressed at the prospect of another election - a second in three years and less than 12 months since a referendum.

Some of you may share her views, others will be glad to have the chance to vote again.

Of course, there will be many different opinions and views, but the reality is that we have elections which allow us to vote, to make our voice be heard and to have our say.

And of course all of this takes up a lot of our news coverage.

Last week we had the opportunity to vote for the person we wanted to represent us at a county level.

Some will be pleased with the result, some will be disappointed.

But in this local election we had, and in the General Election we will have, the chance to vote for those whom we think will best serve our needs - the one who will represent our community the best.

We look to our MPs and councillors lead us, to serve us and to listen to us.

But it’s a strange situation – we have choices to make, but we are not always guaranteed our choice will be what we get.

We make our decisions, we cast out vote and then we have to wait and see.

People of faith are also people who have made decisions; who have, in a sense, cast their vote.

But the difference is that there isn’t uncertainty about the outcome.

When we decide to believe in God, we can be certain about what we’re ‘voting’ for.

We are making a decision to enter into a relationship with a loving Father, who knows each one of us uniquely.

We are ‘voting’ for the one who created us and wants to be involved in our lives, and will always be there for us, will listen to us and will always delight in us.

An unlike elections, that are only open to anyone over 18 years old, this relationship with God is open to all.

No-one is excluded and everybody is welcome.

May God bless you.
