Social transport needs recruits

-

VOLUNTEERS are needed to provide a transport lifeline to help elderly, isolated or disabled people get out and about.

Three community transport schemes in Blaby need more drivers as well as admin help and support volunteers.

Commbus, Braunstone Town Community Minibus and the Community Action Partnership Social Car Scheme all serve the district. During 2015-16 the three schemes made more than 18,000 passenger journeys between them.

Each provides an essential service for many older, disabled or isolated residents who otherwise would not get out and about. All three organisations rely on volunteers to keep running, with recruitment of drivers one of the main challenges.

No previous experience is necessary to become a volunteer driver, with full support offered. There are opportunities for volunteers to drive a minibus or use their own vehicle for the social car scheme.

Other areas where volunteers are required include back office and admin, bookings, fundraising and assisting passengers on and off minibuses.
