Why should I have to pay for the rich and famous to have their winter fuel?

-

ALTHOUGH I am a pensioner, I see no reason why my income should be better protected than everyone else’s, so I have no problem losing the socalled triple lock.

I am also willing to give up my winter fuel allowance as long as it is spent on people worse off than me.

The fact that incredibly wealthy people such as Sir Richard Branson and Lord Alan Sugar receive it is quite absurd and what better approach is there than means testing?

I’m sure if Mr Branson feels a bit chilly, he’ll fly off to his private island and I do rather resent subsidising his journey.

There is no such thing as “fuel poverty”, just poverty and a correctly established means-test will ensure the money goes to those who need it most.

Taking the view that universal benefits are justified on the basis of paying back what one has paid in, misses the point of the welfare state completely.
