Megan death: Two charged
TWO men have appeared in court charged with the manslaughter of schoolgirl Megan Bannister.
The 16-year-old was found in the back of a car following a road smash on Desford Road, Enderby on May 14.
Jason Burder, aged 28, of Braunstone Avenue, Leicester, and 27-year-old Adam King, of Waltham Avenue Leicester, were arrested following the discovery.
They were charged last Wednesday night and appeared at Leicester Magistrates Court on Thursday to face charges of gross negligence manslaughter.
Both were denied bail during the hearing and were remanded into custody to appear at Leicester Crown Court on June 15.
The Wigston College student Megan was discovered in the back of a black Vauxhall Astra.
The car had been involved in a collision with a motorbike at around 11.45am on Sunday (May 14).
Megan’s family paid tribute to her saying they were ‘utterly broken’ by her death.
The statement, released by police, said: “Megan was our beautiful, talented, loving daughter and sister, and our hearts have been utterly broken by her death.
“The thought of life without Megan is impossible to imagine, and we cannot adequately express in words the sense of numbness and overwhelming grief we feel at her loss.
“She was bright, clever, and a responsible person who loved her family and her many friends.
“She had a strong self-will and had set her heart on training to becoming a midwife.
“Knowing how confident and determined she was, we have no doubt she would have realised that dream.
“As a family, we are doing our best to support one another at this harrowing time, and would respectfully ask that we are left alone to grieve in private without intrusion.“
Wigston College also released a statement saying Megan was popular and had ambitions to be a midwife which she would have been ‘brilliant’ at.
A third man, aged 34, was arrested last Wednesday as part of the investigation into Megan’s death.
He was questioned on suspicion of possession of Class A drugs with intent to supply.
He was released pending further enquiries.
