Michael Mullaney who is standing for the Lib Dems

-

If I’m elected our next MP people will notice a huge difference. They’ll have an MP who lives locally in Hinckley. Who’ll champion the key issue of defending our NHS, schools and other services.

I’ve campaigned with residents successfully to save Hinckley’s Ambulance Station and its second fire engine when it was threatened with Conservative cuts. If I can do this before I become MP how much more could I deliver if you elect me your MP?

For the last 30 years we’ve had the same MP David Tredinnick. People tell me they want a new MP this time, not another 5 years of the same MP.

We can get change this time. At the last two general elections I finished a strong second to David Tredinnick. With your support we can elect a new local MP, who lives here and will fight tirelessly for local people and their services.

How would you describe yourself in five words?

Hard-working, determined, caring, principled, driven

What got you into politics and who influenced you?

I got into politics to try and improve everyday lives for people.

Do you have a secret talent or something you are rather good at?

I am very good with figures and statistics.

Do you cook and what is your favourite dish?

I can cook but am not a very good cook! Fish and chips.

What can you offer Hinckley for the next five years, if elected?

I can offer Hinckley a new kind of MP. An MP who lives in the town. An MP who will work all year round for local people. Who will champion the vital causes of our local NHS and education services which are hard pressed. An MP who will be visible in the town and hold regular surgeries that people can visit. An MP who is accessible on social media and in person. People will notice a huge change if they elect me to replace their current MP

A primary school in Desford has just announced job cuts due to a “chronic” lack of funding which many schools in the area face. What needs to be done about it?

We need to invest more in local schools. Our schools are amongst the worst financed in Britain. We desperately need fair funding for our local schools. Despite having Conservative MPs and a Conservative County Council our area’s schools don’t get the funding they need. The Conservatives take us for granted, expecting us to keep electing them and accept such a bad deal for our local schools. Electing a new Lib Dem MP will give the Conservatives the shock they need to finally provide fair funding to Leicestershire’s schools.

Brexit, good or bad news for Hinckley?

We must await the outcome of the deal to see what it contains, many people involved in business are concerned about the economic affects of a hard Brexit and leaving the single market.

Hinckley’s Mount Road hospital - to close or not to close?

Local residents have responded fantastically to saving the hospital. It’s been a pleasure to work with Lynda Gibbs and other local campaigners to raise over 12,000 signatures to save the hospital.

Our large growing population in Hinckley deserves a major medical facility in the town. If the hospital can’t be kept open as it is then our town deserves an NHS Walk-in Centre and I will fight for this as your MP. In addition to our hospital closing, there is the threat to close Glenfield

On Thursday next week, Polling booths will open between 7am and 10pm on election day.

Counting the votes will begin when the polls close and continue on Friday, June 9. There are 650 seats in the House of Commons. A general election is how we choose our government. It’s how we decide who gets to be Prime Minister and run the country, taking responsibility for schools, hospitals, defence, Brexit and more.

But we don’t elect the Prime Minister directly. Children’s Heart Unit and our GPs being totally overstretched and people having to wait weeks for a GP appointment. This is not good enough, we need a local MP who will fight for the quality NHS our area needs.

How would you solve Hinckley’s traffic problems?

The Conservative County Council needs to take more seriously the problems of traffic congestion in Hinckley. As MP for our area I would be repeatedly raising this issue with them. The Conservatives seem to take our area for granted. Electing a Lib Dem MP will give them the wake up call they need to start taking the measures needed to sort trafiic problems in the town.

What is your idea of a perfect night in or out?

Watching a comedy box set on the tv with a box of chocolates.

Instead, voters get the chance to elect a local MP.

The United Kingdom is divided into 650 constituencies, and each constituency has one MP.

Most candidates who want to be MPs are members of political parties, such as the Labour Party, Conservative Party, Liberal Democrats, Greens or UKIP.

Once the election is over, we can see which party has got the most MPs. If any party has more than half the MPs - that’s 325 or more - then they get to form a Government .
