Co-op gives thousands to youth groups

-

YOUTH groups across the borough are benefiting from thousands of pounds of funding from Co-op stores in the area.

Hinckley Sea Cadets and the 12th Hinckley (Hollycroft) Scouts have between them received nearly £14,000 raised during a six-month campaign across Co-op stores in Trent Road, Hinckley; Wood Street, Earl Shilton and Horestone Grange, Nuneaton.

As part of a Co-op Food membership scheme, the stores put 1p from every £1 spent on Co-op products, plus money generated by the sale of plastic carrier bags, into a fund to benefit community causes, to which groups applied for grants.

As a result, Hinckley Sea Cadets received a cheque for £6,895 and the 12th Hinckley (Hollycroft) Scouts £6,901.

Hinckley’s Trent Road store has pledged its next community fund pay-out to Hinckley-based WorkLink, an upcycling project run by unemployed adults including those with special needs and mental ill health.

And Earl Shilton’s Wood Street store is currently generating funds for Earl Shilton Scouts whose outdated meeting hut is in serious need of repair.

Hinckley Sea Cadets unit management trustee Peter Doggett said he was “thrilled” by the Co-op’s recent donation and passed on his thanks, on behalf of the whole unit for the funding.

As the donation was far greater than expected, he said the unit had not yet decided how to spend the money but gave his assurance that “not a penny will be wasted”.

The unit’s aged minibus is in need of replacement and the Co-op donation could help towards that.
