Museum publishes magazine

-

THE SUMMER 2017 edition of The Hinckley Historian, the magazine of Hinckley and District Museum, has just been published.

The magazine is once again offering original material that deals with previously unexplored aspects of the Hinckley’s past.

Ian Phillpott has written a detailed study of the chemist, Inchle Knight, providing a unique insight into life in Victorian times and containing details beyond simple biographical information.

Anyone who has ever wondered why there are the remains of a disused railway around Stoke Golding can find out more through Alan Briggs in his study.

Another original piece of research has been provided by Paul Griffiths, who has explored the pioneering efforts of Hinckley Council to build some of the first council houses in the country.

Ian Phillpott has also provided the text of a booklet published by the Salvation Army in 1931 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Hinckley corps as well as the Silver Jubilee of George V.

Although, this material has been published before, the booklet that it is taken from is exceptionally rare and, as well as providing a valuable insight to the town’s social history, it is the main source for the history of the Salvation Army in Hinckley.

The Hinckley Historian is now on sale at the usual outlets – Hinckley Library, The Art Studio at 102 Castle Street, and the Castle Street branch of the Hinckley and Rugby Building Society - at £2 a copy.

This edition and back issues of The Hinckley Historian magazine are also available from the museum – email hinckleymuseum@hotmail. co.uk for details.
