Family firm have highest UK honour all locked up

A FAMILY-RUN window and door security company from Burbage has been recognised with one of the most prestigious awards in UK business, the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in Innovation.

Jackloc was founded in 2003 by Emma Wells and her late sister Deborah Allbutt, with their other sister Judith Burrows joining as a director in 2008.

The business is built on the pioneering design created by their father Derek Horne after speaking with a hotelier.

The hotel boss had come perilously close to having a child fall from a window.

So Mr Horne created a simple, yet effective cable window restrictor to dra- matically reduce the risk of falling.

Jackloc’s products are now exported and used in hotels across the world, including five-star hotels in Iraq, The Ritz London, the Travelodge Hotel Group and the Dream House Hotel in Manhattan, New York.

Emma said they were proud to receive the award, adding: “We are unbelievably honoured to receive the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in the Innovation category.

“To be recognised by the highest honour in UK business, renowned across the world, is an incredibly proud moment for Jackloc and is the result of our continued commitment to innovation and safety.”

Named after Deborah’s son Jack, Jackloc has grown to include window and door restrictors including push-and-turn, swivel/ stud, folding and the original key-lockable Jackloc.

Judith said: “Jackloc has come an awfully long way from working at the dining room table.

“We are supplying Jacklocs across the world, including seven-star hospitals in Abu Dhabi, five-star hotels in Iraq and we’re working in close partnership with local NHS trusts and leading hotel chains here in the UK.

“While this award is truly amazing and something we never thought we would receive, our hard work doesn’t stop.

“We are dedicated to reducing the number of injuries and fatalities across the world caused by falling from windows.”
