With 484 thefts from a vehicle for every 100,000 residents, or 4,995 cases in 2016/17, Leicesters­hire police force area was the third most dangerous for your belongings in your car during this period, after West Yorkshire and West Midlands.

However, the number of thefts has decreased compared to the previous financial year when there were 618 thefts from a vehicle for every 100,000 people living in the area, or 6,387 in total.

Police provide some tips to avoid thefts from cars and other motor vehicles.

The best way to protect your belongings, they suggest, is to minimise the availabili­ty of property.

Keep them away out of sight and lock your car whenever you leave it.

They recommend to not store things in the boot and say it’s also worth removing everything from the car, such as removable stereos and sat nav equipment, and to not even leave a jacket where it can be seen.

In 2016/2017, there were 189,642 thefts from a vehicle, 333 for every 100,000 residents in England and Wales.

However, the number decreased compared to 2015/2016 when there were 238,842 thefts, the equivalent of 420 for every 100,000 residents.

West Yorkshire saw the highest rate of thefts from vehicles per person with 518 cases for every 100,000 people resident in the area.

West Midlands followed with the second highest rate, 14,341 cases or 515 for every 100,000 people living in the region.

Dyfed-Powys, Wales, recorded the lowest rate. There was only the equivalent of 84 thefts from a vehicle for every 100,000 people, or 436 in total.

In recent months social media has been awash with reports by residents in Hinckley and the surroundin­g areas of break-in to vehicles.
