Charity shop hit by closure of Co-op

A CHARITY shop is expanding its business by selling new furniture in a bid to boost trade.

The manager of the Age UK national charity shop at the top of Castle Street in Hinckley says business has bottomed out since the nearby Co-op department store closed in January last year.

Mark Pinnell, who has managed the store for two years, said: “Since the closure of the Co-op last year, business at my shop has suffered a significant downturn in footfall and therefore profits.

“When people used to use the Co-op they’d pass us twice. “Sales have dropped. “Because of this we have decided to start selling new furniture items which it is hoped will attract new customers.”

The store now stocks furniture, which the charity’s head office buys as surplus stock from High Street retailers.

Mr Pinnell said: “It’s brand new, quality flat packed furniture at extremely competitive prices.

“The current range includes lamp tables, coffee tables, TV units, bookcase and nest of tables finished in quality oak along with a shoe storage unit and a wall display ladder both available in a white finish.

“Our best seller to date has been the nest of tables priced at £65.”

Items vary according to availability.

There is a service road at the back of the shop for people to collect larger items and staff are able to give a hand.

The shop, which is staffed by a team of 14 volunteers, opens from 9am to 5pm Monday to Saturday and on bank holidays from 10am to 4pm.

Mr Pinnell said the store is always grateful for donated items to sell, including clothes, shoes, books and electrical items.

He is also keen to take on more volunteers to help run the business.

They must be aged over 16 and able to give references. Young people needing to carry out community service for schemes such as the Duke of Edinburgh Award and the Prince’s Trust are welcome and any amount of time they can give will be appreciated.
