Olympic star hands out season awards
AN OLYMPIC swimmer spoke to hundreds of children at a Hinckley school sports awards after they competed in more than 250 fixtures.
Hinckley Academy and John Cleveland Sixth Form Centre hosted the event aimed at children aged 11 to 16.
Silver medal-winning Olympic swimmer Joe Roebuck gave a motivational speech at the event aimed at inspiring the young swimmers.
He then handed out the awards to delighted pupils.
The Butt Lane school has competed in 257 fixtures in 150 school days progressing to 28 Level 2 competitions over the past year.
Marc Howgate said: “This figure is significant and down to the commitment demonstrated by students’ as well as the time offered by staff; 40 hours a week additional after school, break and lunch.
“The evening was designed to celebrate the success of our young people and to launch a new award system where students could achieve a bronze, silver or gold badge to wear on their blazer based on criteria. “
After the speech other awards were given such as Key Stage 3 (ages 11 to 14) and Key Stage 4 (ages 14 to 16) Sports Man and Women as well as Most Improved Team.
The students’ dressed in smart wear and had a two course carvery The Green Rooms in Hinckley and finished with a disco.
Parents were invited for the first hour of the evening to share a drink with staff and talk about the seasons successes before being asked to leave so the students’ could sit down and start their evening.
