Knife thug left victim with horror injuries

Scullion, who sliced victim’s back open, jailed for 12 years

A VIOLENT thug has been jailed for a knife attack outside a Hinckley pub which left his victim’s internal organs exposed.

Darryn Scullion, aged 41, of no fixed address, launched a vicious attack on his victim outside The Union Inn on Stockwell Head leaving him with life-changing injuries.

Scullion had been verbally abusing bar staff in the pub’s garden when the victim intervened.

As a fight broke out between the pair, Scullion pulled a knife and sliced open the 32-year-old victim’s back on July 25 last year.

He was found guilty of causing grievous bodily harm with intent on Friday May 12 at Birmingham Crown Court. He was jailed for 12 years.

As he begins his sentence, Sarah, the victim’s mum, said Scullion was a ‘very dangerous man’ and described his actions as ‘sinister and callous’.

Sarah, a midwife, said: “In the blink of an eye Darryn Scullion has, through his sinister and callous actions, created a scar not only physically, emotionally and psychologically upon him with the blade, but upon our whole family.”

Recalling the moment she was told he had been stabbed, Sarah said: “After attending a music concert with my daughter I received a telephone call informing me that my son had been stabbed.

“The initial response I felt was disbelief, which was quickly replaced by shock, fear, panic and an overwhelming concern over his wellbeing.

“Upon our arrival at the hospital, we were shown to the rela- tives’ room, where we faced a harrowing two-hour wait for information due to the necessary treatment, investigations and procedures that my son required.

“Despite counselling by the nurse prior to seeing my son, the scene that met us on entering his cubicle was horrific and, though devastating, I managed to hide my shock from him, as he asked me, ‘Is it bad mum?’.

“To see your child with such barbaric injuries is something no parent should ever have to endure.

“This image will stay with me forever.

“Myself and my youngest son are currently suffering with anxiety directly related to this incident.

“We are a close family where love and support are in abundance, but the journey to recovery will be a long one for all of us as emotional and psychological wounds can last a lifetime.

“I believe Darryn Scullion to be a very dangerous man that lacks remorse for his crime or any compassion for suffering he has caused.”

Detective Constable Simon Clarke, the investigating officer, said: “This was a horrific attack which took place in front of several members of the public, who are still traumatised by what they witnessed that day and the injuries the victim sustained.

“The victim was very lucky, although his injuries were serious, that he didn’t lose his life.

“The judge referred to Scullion as a dangerous offender with a previous conviction for using a knife in an assault and today’s significant sentence shows the seriousness of this offence.”
