Investigat­ion as two die in motorway crash

TWO people were killed in a smash between a lorry and two cars on the M1.

The southbound carriagewa­y was closed for around eight hours following the crash which happened at around 4.10pm last Tuesday (July 5).

A white Fiat 500, a black Vauxhall Corsa and a white HGV with a red container collided between junctions 20 for Lutterwort­h and 19 at the Catthorpe Interchang­e.

Two men in the Fiat, the driver and a passenger, both in their 50s, were pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Corsa was taken to hospital for treatment for minor injuries while the lorry driver was uninjured.

Traffic officers carried out a detailed investigat­ion at the scene in the hours following the crash with the carriagewa­y only reopening at around midnight.

Detective Sergeant Mark Watling, from Leicesters­hire Police, appealed for witnesses and is asked anyone who saw the involved vehicles beforehand or saw the collision to contact him.

He said: “I am also keen to speak to anyone who hasn’t as yet contacted police to please get in touch.

“The informatio­n you have could help our investigat­ion so please contact us.”

Anyone with informatio­n is asked to contact police on 101 quoting incident 454 of 4 July.
