Near collision at junction as driver runs red light

-

A WHITE Volkswagen Golf was inches from causing a serious collision when it jumped a red light at a Leicestershire retail park.

Hinckley driver Rob Good captured the moment the reckless driver sped through a junction at Fosse Park, narrowly avoiding another car.

Rob was one of several lawabiding drivers waiting at the red light on Soar Valley Way when he saw the VW Golf tearing down the road from behind him.

The car sped across the B4114 at the junction with Narborough Road South at about 10pm on Monday July 3 when lots of other traffic was about.

The light had been red for at least 10 seconds when the vehicle came up behind Rob, who claims the car was travelling at a speed of at least 90 mph.

The offending vehicle only just managed to get across the junction ahead of another car that nearly crashed into it.

The light-jumper swerved dra- matically after the near miss, bashing into the kerb on the right side of the road before regaining control of the vehicle in time to jump the next set of red lights, 100 yards along the road.

Rob, 31, was coming home from a friend’s house when he witnessed the near miss.

“He goes through the two sets of red lights - you can’t see it clearly on the video but he crashed into the kerb as well - and then, from what I can gather, he seems to have continued jumping all the lights to the M69.”

On the video, Rob can be heard muttering a sarcastic, “Okay” after the near miss.

He said: “When I was sitting there I thought it looked dangerous, but then when I watched the dash cam footage back later I realised just how close it really was.

“I’m planning on sending the video to the police because lots of people have told me I should.

“There were quite a few cars around so it was pretty close to being a serious crash.”

Last year more than 6,000 motorists were caught jumping red lights along Soar Valley Way.

Rob has posted the video onto YouTube and people commenting have expressed their shock at what happened.

One said: “Really glad you captured this reckless driving and shared it with us all. Glad you were lucky enough not be caught up in it.”
