Festival looks to dig up the past

EVENTS will be held in and around the area as part of the Festival of British Archaeolog­y which runs for a fortnight from Saturday July 15.

Hinckley Archaeolog­ical Society will be taking part by hosting a talk and offering would-be archaeolog­ists the chance of joining a dig on the Fosse Way.

Two-and-a-half hour excavation sessions on the Roman road will be offered for beginners, including accompanie­d children over 14, on the morning and afternoon of Saturday 15, Sunday 16, Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 in July.

Places are free, with all necessary training and equipment provided, but must be booked in advance by calling Malcolm on Hinckley 634765.

On Monday July 24, the society will host a talk by Grahame Appleby, a former senior research officer with Cambridge Archaeolog­ical Unit, about Must Farm, a fenland site which is regarded as one of the most important Bronze Age sites in Britain.

It will be held in Hinckley’s United Reformed Church in The Borough at 7pm.

Admission is £5 on the door and will include tea, coffee and biscuits before the talk begins at 7.30pm.
