Hairspray returns to the Curve

-

IT FEATURED big hearts, big hair and it was a big hit - and now it’s coming back.

Leicester’s Curve theatre will see the international smash hit musical comedy Hairspray return to its boards when it starts its second tour this summer.

The venue is one of 30 it will visit for a six-night run from October 13 after starting from the Rutland Street theatre last year.

Hairspray is based on the 1988 film of the same name directed by Jon Waters which was later turned into a musical with John Travolta, Christopher Walken, Michelle Pfeiffer and Zac Efron.

It’s Baltimore, 1962 and Tracy Turnblad is a big girl with big hair and an even bigger dream: to dance her way onto national TV, and into the heart of teen idol Link Larkin.

Tracy’s audition makes her a local star and soon she is using her new-found fame to fight for integration. But can she win equality – and Link’s heart – without denting her ‘do?

Directed by Paul Kerryson, the show stars Tony Maudsley (ITV1’s Benidorm) as Edna Turnblad, Claire Sweeney (Educating Rita, Chicago) as Velma Von Tussle, Peter Dun- can (Blue Peter, Tumble) as Wilbur Turnblad, Brenda Edwards (Chicago, We Will Rock You, X Factor) as Motormouth Maybelle and Ashley Gilmour as Link Larkin.

With music and lyrics by the Academy Award, Tony and Emmy winning duo Marc Shaiman and Scott Whittman, the musical originally opened to rave reviews on Broadway in 2002, which won the production eight Tony awards.

Hit songs featuring are Welcome To The 60s, You Can’t Stop The Beat, The Nicest Kids in Town and many more.
