Low bridge hit by high lorry

-

DRIVERS faced hold-ups as a lorry struck the low bridge across the A5 again last week.

The road was blocked for a time last Friday when the collision happened at around 1.25pm at the bridge between Dodwells Roundabout and Nutts Lane.

This is the latest in a long series of bridge strikes to happen at the location despite numerous warning signs.

Area Traffic Control said during the incident: “The A5 is blocked. A vehicle has hit the railway bridge near to Dodwells roundabout.

“The A5 could be blocked for sometime - avoid the area if you can.”

A spokesman for Leicestershire Police said: “At 1.35pm a lorry has hit the railway bridge on the A5 near Hinckley. Police are dealing, Please avoid the area.”

Pictures of the smash were posted to Facebook group Spotted Hinckley.

Businesses have complained of the frequency of strikes at the site which they say costs them thousands of pounds each time traffic grinds to a halt on the busy stretch of road which leads from Hinckley to the M69 island.

Network rail have repeatedly urged lorry drivers to check the height of their vehicles and take an alternative route around the notorious low bridge.

Campaigners have also called for a new law requiring lorry drivers to use sat-navs specially designed to guide them away from unsuitable routes.
