New member for anniversary

-

IT HAS been an exciting time for Hinckley and Burbage Lions Club as they help celebrate the centenary of the founding of the organisation.

And on the very 100th anniversary week that Lions Club International was founded, they inducted a new member who was welcomed into the fold by district governor Chris Burrows.

Bill Powell, a retired brewery manager, has joined the club who are a part of the worldwide Lions International, the largest service organisation in the world with over 1.4 million members in 205 countries.

Whenever there is a disaster, the Lions club will help with the knowledge they have the back-up of their worldwide fellow Lions.

Bill said: “I am delighted to be joining such a hardworking and worthwhile organisation, but as well as the serious stuff, we do have fun as well.”

At the same meeting long-serving treasurer Jack Tierney handed over the reins to Mike Hanson. Jack was thanked by members for his sterling 30-plus years in the post and was given a farewell retirement gift.

During the past year, Hinckley and Burbage Lions Club have been hard at work in your community.

They run many events during the year including an annual sponsored charity walk around Bosworth Battlefield in May, which over the years has helped to plough thousands of pounds back into worthy causes in the community.

And they arrange twice-yearly tea parties where elderly people can have their cake and tea, relax and hopefully make new friends. They also volunteer to collect on behalf of the Marie Curie Society at Hinckley supermarkets, complete with yellow daffodil hats.

The club are asked for help by a wide variety of organisations and societies. And during the current year, have given out grants to clubs as diverse as the Air Training Corps, Hollycroft Scouts, the Air Ambulance, and Dial A Ride.

A spokeman said: “You too could be a Lion. You are most welcome to go along and see how much pride and enjoyment you can get from helping other people, meet new friends and join the monthly social and fundraising events.”

Hinckley and Burbage Lions meet on the second Monday in the month at the Plough Inn, Leicester Road, Hinckley at 7.30pm.
