Supermarket hand over charity cheque

-

STAFF at Sainsbury’s at The Crescent in Hinckley have presented a cheque for £585 to Abbie’s Hideaway, the store’s chosen charity for 2016-17.

The charity, set up in memory of former John Cleveland College pupil Abbie Mustard, who died of leukaemia in 2012, offers free caravan hoildays in Mablethorpe, near Skegness, to families with children undergoing cancer treatment.

Abbie’s dad Ian Mustard went to the store to collect a cheque for the amount, which is to be boosted to £764 by recent further fundraising.

The store has also pledged money raised from the sale of 5p plastic carrier bags during the past 12 months to be added to the cause.

Abbie’s Hideaway was voted for by customers and colleagues in 2016, following the store’s inaugural chosen charity, Burbage-based KeepTheBeat.

Money-making endeavours included staff sponsored bike rides, a Christmas raffle, a Santa photo booth, a store ‘scavenger hunt’ and a tombola.

The money raised will help to continue to fund the speciallyadapted caravan, which is fully booked for the rest of this year.

A fundraising festival to keep it running into 2018 is to be held at Hinckley Rugby Club on Leicester Road on Saturday July 29 from 10am.

It will feature arena demonstrations, trade stalls and catering with weekend camping tickets available. Find out more online. Sainsbury’s chosen charity for 2017-18 at The Crescent store has recently been announced as Leicestershire Search and Rescue, known as LeicSAR.
