Controlled explosion for botched chemical experiment
MILITARY bomb disposal experts were called to Kirby Muxloe after a man suffered injuries in what is thought to be a chemical experiment that went wrong.
The Royal Logistics Corps, military bomb disposal specialists, were called to Links Road on Saturday afternoon.
Police, fire and ambulance crews also descended on the street at around 12.30pm.
A man at the address suffered serious injuries to his hands and lower body and was taken to the Queen’s Medical Centre in Notingham where he remains.
Neighbours were warned by police officers that a controlled explosion would take place at 8pm and were warned to stay away from windows.
People living in the up-market neighbour- hood declined to comment on the incident, with one saying she wanted to protect the family involved.
One said: “There were a lot of police fire and ambulances as well as the bomb squad. We never felt in danger.”
Another said: “I understand it involved fireworks and in the current climate you can’t be too careful.
“There were still police in the street on Sunday.”
A member of staff at the offices of Kirby Muxloe Parish Council said: “Police have been in to see us, they say it is a large investigation at a house around an experiment which went wrong and is not terror related.”
A Leicestershire Police spokeswoman said: “Officers are carrying out further enquiries after a man sustained serious injuries to his hands and lower body in a property in Kirby Muxloe.
“The incident was reported to the police at 12.30pm on Saturday.
“The exact circumstances surrounding the injury are under investigation and the injured man was taken to the Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham, where he remains.
“A man has been arrested in connection with the incident. Officers are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.”
