Man arrested over smash which left pensioner dead
A MAN has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving after a pensioner was killed in a road smash near Hinckley.
An 83-year-old from Coventry, who was a passenger in a gold Vauxhall Agila, died at the scene on the M42 north near Appleby Parva on Saturday (August 19) at around 8.50pm.
The driver of the car, a 74-yearold woman, was left in a serious condition in hospital.
A man handed himself into Warwickshire police after the crash which happened between junctions 10 and 11.
A spokesman for Warwickshire Police said: “A 36-year-old man from Birmingham has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving fol- lowing a collision on the M42 on Saturday night.
“The man presented himself to a police station in Birmingham following a police appeal.
“An 83-year-old man from Coventry was declared dead at the scene of the collision
“A 74-year-old woman was taken to hospital where she is in a serious but stable condition.
“A Peugeot 307 was in collision with a gold Vauxhall Agila which contained the deceased and the injured.”
Det Insp Tim Sharp said: “We are continuing to investigate the cause of the collision and we’re keen to speak to anyone who witnessed it or has any other information that could help with our enquiries.
“We would also like to speak to anyone who saw either of the vehicles prior to the collision.”
Anyone with information was urged to contact Warwickshire Police on 101.
The M42 was closed in both directions for several hours while emergency services, including crews from Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service, dealt with the incident.
