Knitters helping to keep premature babies cosy

-

KNITTERS who meet every week in a Hinckley pub have been putting their handmade creations to good use.

Members of Cosy Yarns, which meets at The New Plough on Leicester Road, have donated tiny baby hats and cardigans to the neonatal unit at Leicester General Hospital to help tiny newborn babies.

They have also knitted tiny woollen teddies for the charity Knit For Peace, which distributes the cuddly creations to people in need both at home and abroad.

Hospitals, women’s refuges, refugee drop-in centres, prisons and hospices are among the regular recipients, as well as people facing hardships in developing countries.

Cosy Yarns meets on Tuesdays from 6pm to 8pm, with as many as 20 people turning up to any one session and with members ranging in age from young teenagers to grandparents.

The New Plough’s own crochet group joins the meetings on the first Tuesday of each month.

Cosy Yarns member Margaret Parker said: “We’re a laid-back, friendly, lively group. We love knitters, crocheters, spinners, any fibre fanatic of any ability or experience.

“We bring our own projects but also do a lot of knitting for charity.

“Everyone is welcome for tea, chat, coffee and beer - and new people are always welcome.”

Cosy Yarns members are currently knitting small items to decorate a Christmas tree for inclusion in this year’s Christmas tree festival at St Mary’s Church in the town centre.
