STUDENTS at Hinckley Academy were thrilled with an excellent haul of A level results.

The Butt Lane school achieved a 100 per cent pass rate, with over half of students getting results ranging from A* to B.

An exceptional 26 per cent achieved results from A* to A, with four of the high achievers going to Oxbridge universities.

Dan Guest is off to Mansfield College in Oxford to study mathematics.

He said: “It’s unbelievable to think that I’m going to Oxford.

“I checked UCAS first thing in the morning, so I would be slightly less nervous going in, but it was still a massive surprise”.

Two other students have places at Oxford, one of which is to study mathematics, while another of the students is continuing their studies at Cambridge.

It was a special day for Vitalina Lopatyuk, as her strong results in physics and mathematics mean she is the first person in her family to go to university.

She was born in Ukraine, but moved over to the UK with her parents when she was seven, even though she didn’t speak any English.

Now she’s getting ready to study meterology at Reading.

She said: “I’ve always been interested in the weather. I’ve known since my GCSEs that if I wanted to study meteorology I needed to get good grades.

“I’m really proud to be the first person from my family to be going to university.”

Megan Davey was very satisfied with her straight distinctions (equivalent of A*) in her BTEC courses of health and social care, applied science and public services.

She plans to work in social care now she is well qualified.

She said: “Most of my friends are going to university, but it’s nice to know I have a career ahead of me.”

Rebecca Selby got the grades she needed to advance in her aspirations to become a doctor, as she heads off to study medicine at university.

She said: “One of the challenges of doing my A levels was time management, as I also do a lot of dance classes outside of school.

“I want to be a doctor, but I’m not sure what my specialism will be.

“I’m thinking of maybe being a paramedic or a pediatrician.”

Abigail Hudson will be studying history at Birmingham, having achieved an A* in the subject at A level.

She also got an A* for her extended project qualification, and all As in photography, media studies, and English literature.

Abigail said: “I was really surprised to get all As and above, as I found some aspects of English Literature really challenging.

“These results give me a lot of confidence going forward to university.”

Richard Cahill, principal of Hinckley Academy, said: “I’m over the moon - it’s a fantastic set of results, particularly with the recent changes we’ve gone through and the new A levels.

“As a lot of these courses are new in their content, in some cases there were no past papers for students to use.

“It’s a credit to the hard work of the students and our high quality teachers.”

Anna Newman with AS level results in mathematics, history and chemistry.

She hopes to ultimately study chemistry at Sheffield.

Anna said: “I’ve got it all set out in terms of where I want to go, so I’m really pleased with my results.

“I’m very glad that everything is on track.”

The vast majority of students, 83 per cent, got grades ranging from A* to C, while 99 per cent of the pupils got grades from A* to E.

Heath Lane Academy is celebrating its first year of A level results, with the school achieving a 100 per cent pass rate.

The Earl Shilton academy opened in September 2016 after William Bradford Academy joined Heathfield School.

Teachers were thrilled as 22 per cent of students achieved A*-A grades, 46 per cent got A*-B, and 100 per cent of BTEC students achieved a distinction or a distinction*.

An impressive 80 per cent of students gained A*-B in A Level Mathematics, while 100 per cent of BTEC art and design programme attained a triple distinction, the highest grade possible.

James Owen was pleased with his A*AA in mathematics, fur- ther mathematics and physics.

He said: “When I came here I knew that I had the potential to do well. The support from staff at Heath Lane Academy has allowed me to reach this potential.”

Megan Morris, principal of the academy, said: “I’m delighted that Year 13 students at Heath Lane Academy have maintained their 100 per cent pass rate at A Level and BTEC.

“Their outstanding achievements reflect their hard work and dedication.

“We’re confident that they have bright futures, and are proud that Heath Lane Academy helped them to achieve them.”

Marion Plant, chief executive of The Midland Academies Trust, said: “Congratulations to all those who received their results today.

“This is a fantastic achievement for the school’s first year and a testament to the hard work of the students and staff members.

“We look forward to working with the school to continue this success throughout the next academic year.”

There were beaming faces at Bosworth Academy as students picked up their A level results.

Almost half of pupils at the Desford school achieved A* to B grades, with a 75 per cent getting A* to C.

Simon Brown, headteacher of the school, said: “Our results day is truly a day of celebration for our students following their many years of hard work, commitment and dedication to their studies.

“Our staff should also be very proud of the great level of expertise and support that they have provided.”

Among the straight A* students were Pat Taylor, who will be studying chemistry at the University of Bath, William Beckwith-Chandler, who will study mathematics at the University of Exeter, and Eleanor Torrance, who will read zoology at Nottingham.

Eva Crowson is off to Cambridge to study geography, having achieved an A* and three As.

The academy said the recent changes to the structure of A levels had “proven to be quite a challenge for students and for teachers as they adapt to these changes”, but that they had risen above the difficulties.

It said: “We are confident that our young people leaving Bosworth have many valuable attributes to contribute to their communities and future employers.”
