Everybody needs Good Neighbours on call
A COMMUNITY support scheme has celebrated its third year of operation with the person who made the 1,000th request for its help.
Desford Good Neighbours was launched in 2014 by volunteers who offers support to people across the parish when friends and family are unable to do so.
Its 1,000th request came from James Isherwood, who told scheme leaders: “I don’t know what I would have done without you.”
Mr Isherwood joined other scheme users, volunteers and friends at an anniversary garden party hosted by Dave and Maeve Crocker, where he was invited to help cut a specially-decorated celebratory cake with Good Neighbours committee chairman David Surtees.
Desford Good Neighbours volunteers are ready to offer help with many different tasks but the majority of requests are for transport to medical appointments for older people with mobility difficulties, as well as for befriending.
The scheme has been such a success that it is featured in a video on Leices- tershire County Council’s website to encourage other communities to set up similar projects.
The group was also nominated for Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council’s Making a Difference awards earlier this year.
Anyone interested in joining the scheme as a volunteer, especially those able to offer befriending or transport, is asked to contact the scheme’s dedicated mobile number 07443 640611 or visit desfordgns.org.uk
