Anne takes on the scarecrows

-

WHEN more than 120 scarecrows appeared overnight in a Leicestershire village, heralding the launch of a first-of-its-kind event, a local runner marked the occasion by running to each one in turn and having a photo with it.

Desford’s inaugural three-day Scarecrow Festival saw 119 households and local businesses displaying their straw-filled creations, all within the theme of “Entertainment” – and Anne Newbery from the village ran the entire 14km trail, stopping only for a selfie with each scarecrow.

While hundreds attending the first day of the event enjoyed a leisurely stroll around the exhibits, Anne (48) set herself the challenge of running the entire course and visiting each numbered display in order.

“It was a really hot day and there were a few tough hills to conquer,” said Anne

“But the hardest part was not so much the running but perfecting the pout and taking the selfies!

“My face throbbed from the constant posing!”

“I knew the event was going to be big but I think I underestimated just how big”, she continued.

“I told my husband I was only going to be out for an hour but I was gone more than three hours in the end! But it was worth it.”

Exhibits covered a very wide range of subjects and included characters from films, pop stars, television personalities and story book creatures.
