A CLUTCH of new homes could be constructed on the site of a closed down day care centre in Hinckley.

National property consultancy Carter Jonas is marketing the plot occupied by the former Millfield centre on behalf of Leicestershire County Council.

A planning application to demolish the centre and build 23 homes, including a handful of affordable properties, is currently under scrutiny at Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council.

The two-acre site has a guide price of £600,000.

Nick Muncey from Carter Jonas said: “The former Millfield Day Care Centre site is in a predominantly residential area and is within walking distance of four schools and a range of local amenities which makes it an attractive residential development opportunity.”

An open day for prospective purchasers to view the area will take place on Wednesday September 20 between 2pm and 4pm.

Millfield Day Care Centre was shut down by the county council following a review in 2013 which determined it was no longer fit for purpose.

Built in the 1970s the single storey structure features offices to the front and workshop style rooms to the rear and was used as a facility to care for people with complex learning disabilities and multiple needs.

The review concluded the centre would need significant modernisation if it was to continue to deliver day care provision.

Services were transferred to the Deveron Way Community Life Choices Centre around a quarter of a mile away.

Two other centres Roseleigh Day Care and The Limes now also provide services for young people and adults with special needs, leaving Millfield surplus to requirements.

Currently the building is being used as a mess facility for a small fleet of minibus drivers who operated from the site.

They will also be transferring to an alternative location in the Blaby area in the near future.

Outline planning consent for the 23 properties, a mix of semi-detached and terraced, looks likely to be given, providing further new homes in Wykin if a developer comes on board.
