Bosworth off to winning start in close encounter

-

BEING regarded as the centre of the universe by the Rugby Football Union, Market Bosworth has always had to accept moving leagues to suit the needs of others.

They have played in East One, West One, East Two North and are now in Midlands Two East South.

This season will see some old local opponents from pre-league days together with teams like Luton from down South.

The visitors on Saturday, making their first visit to Cadeby Lane, were a team from Olney in Buckinghamshire, consisting of what appeared to be experienced and well built players compared to Bosworth’s young and lightweight team.

However from the kick off Bosworth put on a good display, showing no fear of the opposition’s size, the bigger they are the harder they fall seemed to be the theory, and it worked.

The first points were gained by Bosworth when scrum-half, Guy Goodman, went over in the corner and Joe Randon converted with a very difficult kick from the touchline.

Within minutes Joe was able to follow this up with a penalty kick to increase the score.

Olney, using their big forwards, managed to mount an attack on the Bosworth line and trundle over under the posts for a converted try to narrow the score.

However in trying to prevent the try a Bosworth player was deemed to have transgressed and was yellow carded.

Surprisingly it was Bosworth who took the advantage which allowed Joe Randon to secure another three points from a penalty kick.

As one Bosworth player returned to the field of play another one was sent to the sin bin to keep them reduced to fourteen players for a continuous period of twenty minutes.

Olney then took the advantage and charged over in the corner but were unable to convert bringing them to within one point of the home side.

Another penalty from the boot of Joe Randon widened the gap and with halftime approaching Bosworth, while defending their own line, picked up on a loose ball and kicked ahead all the way to within five meters of the try line only to loose the ball and have to return to the halfway for a lineout.

The line-out was won and the attack mounted again giving Joe Randon enough space to kick a neatly taken drop goal.

The second half started badly for Bosworth by loosing a line-out five meters out from their own line and so allowing Olney to dive over for their third try which they failed to convert. Again the fortunes changed when from a turn over ball in Bosworth’s twenty two the ball was kicked ahead several times which allowed Joe Randon to increase his points tally by diving on the ball before the opposition could catch him and then converting his own try.

Minutes later flanker Harry Parkes picked up a loose ball and sprinted down the wing to touch down in the corner.

Torrential rain at this point sent the supporters running for shelter but play continued and seemed to refresh the Olney players who mounted a fight back resulting in their fourth try and conversion at the final whistle giving them a couple of bonus points to soften the blow of being been beaten in this entertaining encounter.

The final score Market Bosworth 31 – Olney 24.

After only one game in the new season a rest week is scheduled so Market Bosworth’s next game will be on September 23 away at Pinley.
