Charitable knitters receive radio invite

-

A RADIO producer contacted a knitting group in Hinckley after reading a story about its charitable work in The Hinckley Times.

Sophie Cook, who produces the mid-morning programme on BBC Radio Leicester, contacted the Cosy Yarns group via Facebook after reading about their donations of knitted goods to a city hospital and an international relief agency.

The group, which meets at The New Plough Inn on Leicester Road, has donated baby hats and cardigans to Leicester General Hospital’s neo-natal unit and sent tiny woollen teddies to the charity Knit For Peace, which distributes the comforting toys to children in need both at home and abroad.

In a Facebook post to the group, the producer invited members to visit the studios to talk about their creative charitable support.

Some of them are hoping to do so at the end of the month.

Cosy Yarns meets on Tuesdays from 6pm to 8pm, with as many as 20 people turning up to any one session and with members ranging in age from young teenagers to grandparents.

Member Margaret Parker said: “We’re a laidback, friendly, lively group. We love knitters, crocheters, spinners, any fibre fanatic of any ability or experience.

“We bring our own projects but also do a lot of knitting for charity.

“Everyone is welcome for tea, chat, coffee and beer - and new people are always welcome.”

Members are currently knitting small items to decorate a tree for inclusion in this year’s Christmas tree festival at St Mary’s Church in the town centre.
