Charity bags an unexpected donation
A WHOPPING £2,000 generated by the sale of 5p plastic carrier bags at Sainsbury’s at The Crescent in Hinckley has been donated to charity.
The money was amassed during the 12-month period in which Hinckley-based Abbie’s Hideaway was the store’s chosen charity.
It has been donated to the cause, which offers free caravan hoildays in Mablethorpe to families with children undergoing cancer treatment.
The charity was launched in memory of John Cleveland College pupil Abbie Mustard who died from leukaemia in 2012, aged 16.
Her dad Ian, who coordinates the charity, described the unexpected windfall as “a fabulous surprise”.
Sainsbury’s staff had already presented a cheque for £585 to Ian after a year of fundraising, which was boosted to £764 by a final sponsorship push.
The store also supported a fundraising festival for the charity held at Hinckley Rugby Club on Leicester Road at the end of July, which generated £4,300.
Abbie’s Hideaway was voted for by customers and colleagues in 2016, following the store’s inaugural chosen charity, Bur- bage-based KeepTheBeat.
The money raised will be used to help to continue to fund the speciallyadapted family caravan in 16-year-old Abbie’s name.

Sainsbury’s chosen charity for 2017-18 at The Crescent store is Leicestershire Search and Rescue, known as LeicSAR.
