Anniversary trip for campaigner
AN LGBT rights campaigner from Barwell marked an important anniversary in the progress of gay rights at the Houses of Parliament.
Mathew Hulbert visited Portcullis House in London to see a special display for the 50th anniversary of the partial decriminalisation of homosexuality in England and Wales.
Mr Hulbert also held talks with Baroness Liz Barker, founder of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Global LGBT Rights and chairwoman of the Parliamentary Gender Identity Forum.
He said: “It’s always an honour and a privilege to visit our national Parliament and to speak with Baroness Barker, who does so much for LGBT+ communities both domestically and globally.
“It was made extra special with the chance to view the wonderful and important display marking the half-century since partial decriminalisation.
“It reminds me that those of us who campaign for rights and equality today, truly do stand on the shoulders of giants.”
The display included a post box painted in the colours of the rainbow flag, an international symbols of LGBT+ pride.
Mr Hulbert organises an annual event at St Mary’s Church in Hinckley, for LGBT History Month.
He added: “We, especially, need to see increased rights and equality for transgender people and individuals who are non-binary.
“I pledge to play my part in the fight for full and genuine equality.”
