A WOMAN from Hinckley has raised thousands of pounds in memory of a dearly departed friend.

Sue Summerill has been taking part in marathons and running quizzes since June, to raise funds for The Brain Tumour charity.

A longtime friend of Sue’s, Maureen ‘Mo’ Hunt, also from Hinckley, died soon after being diagnosed with a tumour, earlier this year.

Sue said: “Maureen was a good friend for many years.

“She played a big part in my life and showed me how to enjoy life.

“This is my way of saying goodbye.”

So far Sue has raised around £2,300, and needs a donation of £2,500 to enter for a place in the London Marathon, which she hopes to take part in next year.

She said that if she doesn’t secure a place, she will run in the Shakespeare marathon in May, which takes place in Stratford-upon-Avon and which she already has a place on.

Sue took part in the Robin Hood half marathon in September, completing it in two hours and 32 minutes, as well as the Leicester 10K.

She’s also hoping to run in the Coventry half marathon in March next year, as a final test before taking on a full course.

Sue owns the Pestle and Mortar micro-pub on upper Castle Street, and has been running pub quizzes there to support her efforts.

Further funds have come from selling donated DVDs at the venue, with Sue raising £60 from selling them at just 50p each.

The New Plough Inn on Leicester Road, a favourite pub of Maureen and her husband Roy, also held a quiz night to support the cause, raising £620.

Roy and Maureen’s son and daughter attended the event, who live in Burbage.

Mauren is also survived by four grandchildren.

A car boot sale added another £166 to the pot, with Brookfield Signs and Designs in Burbage providing a banner for the event.

You can make a donation to Sue’s cause on her Just Giving page.
