Magic lantern in the city

-

A MAGIC lantern show is coming to Leicester Cathedral.

The two-day event will feature original music from the musical genre that preceded the cinema, including songs from France, Germany and the USA spanning almost 200 years.

Showing during the first evening will be a number of historic magic lantern shows from France, while the second evening will look at the German Lied, including composers Franz Schubert and Clara Schumann.

The second session will also look at popular and little-known US songs, such as work by Gershwin and Weill, with a popular jazzy influence, and pieces by Copland and Ives.

Providing the music will be performers Linnéa Markgren (soprano), Motje Wolf (mezzo-soprano), Philip Leech (tenor), and Sara Wilander, on the piano.

The magic lantern was an early type of image projector developed in the 17th century and used mostly for entertainment.

The latest edition of Festival of Song: Revolution, Reconciliation and Renewal is taking place on October 6 and 7, starting on both evenings at 7.30pm.

Standard tickets are £10, £8 for concessions, or £16 for both performances.

Book your ticket by emailing motjewolf@ googlemail.com or call Philip Leech on 07834 195776.

Tickets can also be purchased on the door.
