Whitby end run of wins
WHITBY Town denied Barwell four victories on the run with an impressive display at The Turnbull Ground, writes Luke Pawley.
The home side started the game positively, having more of the ball in the opposition’s half. Unfortunately for Barwell, defender Elliot Percival was carried off with a nasty injury on seven minutes.
Their fortunes got even worse five minutes later, as Townsend gave away a penalty for a clumsy push. David Carson stepped up to slot the ball into the bottom corner.
Whitby were very much on top, yet struggled against Barwell’s aggression in individual battles. The visitors created chances through Ryan Seal and Matt Stenson, but Shane Bland was on fine form in the Whitby goal. The hosts went in ahead at the break.
There was little to report in the second half, with Whitby still maintaining possession but Barwell using their physicality well. Whitby squandered a three-onone chance in the box, and Weledji rolled a golden opportunity wide shortly afterwards.
Barwell upped the intensity and looked to hit long balls to the towering figures of Perry and Stenson. However, the Canaries couldn’t create many chances of significance.
Castle kept the deficit down with some great saves towards the end, but his Barwell side were unable to find an equaliser.
Final score: Whitby Town 1-0 Barwell
