Rescue centre’s plea to help with baby hedgehogs

-

A HEDGEHOG rescue charity is looking for public support after rescuing a family of five adorable hoglets.

The baby hedgehogs, along with their mother, have been rescued by Hogarth’s / Spikey’s Hedgehog Rescue, based in Hinckley.

The charity took on the adorable youngsters when their original nestsite was disturbed and the area considered too dangerous for them to stay there.

However, the charity is now desperately searching for funds to buy new equipment to help keep baby hedgehogs warm during the winter months.

Any cash raised would be used to buy heated hospital cages for orphaned or sick baby hedgehogs, which usually come to the charity via Fairfield Veterinary Centre, on Leicester Road.

Dave Hall, from the charity, said the hedgehogs had now started to grow up, adding: “They have now started to explore further afield, the whole family have been a success, they are no longer babies but now look like small hedgehogs, and should have sufficient weight to survive hibernation.

“For almost two whole decades, the charity has been taking-in hedgehogs via the excellent Fairfield Veterinary Centre - the vast majority have come through them.

“The charity has a very high success-rate, all of them have survived again this year. All of last year’s Autumn hoglets survived.

“The organisation began late in 1993, and hasn’t just been a hedgehog rescue, but has done many other things.”

The organisation also started the country’s first ‘Chipmunk Rescue’ service, over 20 years ago.

This part of the charity, called Chloe’s Chipmunk Corner, adopts pet chipmunks and fosters them.

The organisation also creates items for poorly children, such as colouring-in posters and books, which they send to hospitals.

They are looking for generous donations so that they can create other items, such as gift-wrapped presents, to send to the youngsters.
