Plans to go on show for new Lidl food store
PLANS for a major new budget supermarket in Hinckley will be unveiled to the public next week.
A consultation day is being organised by discount retailer Lidl to showcase its blueprint for a new 2,146 sq m store on Coventry Road.
The German based chain is looking to move from its current Hawley Road location to the site of the former HJ Hall Socks factory.
Contracts for the plot were exchanged with Hallmark Properties Limited in August.
Now people will get the chance to view the proposals being put forward to Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council.
Running from 2.30pm to 6.30pm the event takes place at The Meeting Centre on Marchant Road on Wednesday October 18.
Visitors will be invited to chat to representatives, leave comments and sign a petition of support.
The new energy efficient store will create up to 40 jobs on a full-time or parttime basis, provide a free 118 space customer car park and offer an in-store bakery and customer toilets.
Lidl was crowned Best Supermarket 2016 by readers of Good House- keeping and with a market share of 5.2%.
The relocation has been broadly welcomed by councillors and borough business chiefs.
Rosemary Wright, president of Hinckley and District Chamber of Trade, said: “The new location for Lidl is a great place for them.”
Leader of the council Mike Hall said: “Now we are getting major retailers in the centre of Hinckley and I think it will be good for the whole town and contribute to the regeneration of the centre.”
The proposed relocation of Lidl comes hard on the heels of an announcement by Aldi that it hopes to build a store on a derelict factory site on Holliers Walk.
The current Lidl opposite the council offices has been operating for around 13 years.
