Dog’s plight inspires homeless donation

DOG-LOVER David Abbott has been so impressed with the work of Hinckley Homeless Group (HHG) that he has pledged to donate £100 towards its work in memory of his formerly homeless four-legged friend.

The group of volunteer trustees runs Lawrence House in Hinckley, the area’s only accommodation for homeless young people from across the borough, which relies on public donations for funding.

Mr Abbott attended its recent annual general meeting, where he heard how the home is making a difference to the lives of 16 to 25-year-olds who might otherwise end up on the streets.

His black Labrador Simmy had himself been rescued from wan- dering the streets of Bristol.

Simmy was eventually rehomed with a neighbour in Stoke Golding but “adopted” Mr Abbott in later life, spending the last four years with him.

Mr Abbott said: “Simmy was absolutely lovely with all and sun- dry with not the slightest hint of aggression.

“Eventually, like so many Labradors, his legs were giving way, though I was inconsolable on having to make the decision to have him put to sleep.

“I am still devastated.”

He added: “Following the meeting, I was so impressed with the work of the organisation, more particularly the unpaid, that I came up with the idea of putting up the money in honour of my dog.”

HHG chairman of trustees Diana Morgan said: “HHG is very grateful for the interest and encouragement of our supporters and for every donation.

“We are especially touched by Mr Abbott’s donation in memory of his dog, ‘man’s best friend’, as the young people who come to us are often lonely and benefit greatly from the friendship they find at Lawrence House.”

Anyone wishing to make a donation to Hinckley Homeless Group or interested in becoming a Friend of Lawrence House is asked to call the Wood Street office on Hinckley 890688.
