Young duo help seal George Ward victory in top match

DIVISION Two of the table tennis league saw league leaders George Ward D away to second-placed Hit’N’Hope, writes Mike Holt.

The match did not disappoint as Hit’n’Hope went four sets to three up, then came the GWD fightback. First, Jack Dennis produced his best ever display in defeating Bryan Moylan (H’n’H) 11-4 in the fifth game.

Then Roger Hill (GWD) took the next to bring the scores to 4-5 in favour of the Barwell team.

In the brave move GWD threw in their young players Callum Dale and Dennis against the more experience­d Ian Nixon and John Harrison in the doubles, the youngsters comfortabl­e winning the doubles to win the match by six sets to four.

In their next match GWD collecting a 10 sets to nil win over Market Bosworth 2.

Hit’n’Hope came back to form with a win over Cat E by six sets to four. Ian Nixon (H’n’H) winning his three with Alex Downes taking two sets for Cat E.

Market Bosworth 1 defeated their own second team by seven sets to three, Dave Knappett (MB1) taking his three, but both Harry Thomas and Leana Bancroft (both MB2) winning one apiece.

Cat F beat their own G team by nine sets to one; Phil Wood (Cat F) was top player with three wins. They followed up that victory with another win against Cat H. Wood again claiming hid maximum. Ian Knight (Cat H) had two wins.

Cat H took seven sets to three win over Cat E with Knight winning his three.

Newcomers George Ward F depleted by illness found Queen’s Barwell too strong going down to a nine sets to one defeat.

Jaqueline Flavell and Steve Lawton both collecting maximums for Queen’s. GWF bounced back in their next match with a good seven sets to three win over Market Bosworth 1 for whom John Veasey won all three.

Finally George Ward C recorded a good win over Queen’s Barwell by seven sets to three. Liam Davies (GWC) having a great night to win his three, whilst Alec Mason took two for Queens.

George Ward D now lead the table with 46 points from six games, Hit’n’Hope lie second with 40 points. Cat H in third spot with 35 points.
