Marathon run in pal’s memory
A WOMAN from Hinckley has won a place in next year’s London Marathon.
Sue Summerill will be running across the capital city in aid of The Brain Tumour charity.
She has been fundraising for the charity since her longtime friend, Maureen ‘Mo’ Hunt, died from the disease this year.
She said: “It’s very exciting, but a little bit scary.
“It’s only just sinking in.
“Maureen was a good friend for many years.
“She played a big part in my life and showed me how to enjoy life.
“This is my way of saying goodbye.”
Sue has already raised more than £2,500, taking part in the Robin Hood half marathon in September, which she completed in two hours and 32 minutes, as well as the Leicester 10K.
She is doing a long run every week and will start a training plan in January ahead of the London Marathon, and hopes to run the Coventry half marathon in March as a final test.
Sue owns the Pestle and Mortar micro-pub on upper Castle Street, and alongside her running, she has been holding pub quizzes to raise funds.
She’s also been selling donated DVDs at the venue, raising more than £60 from selling them at just 50p each.
The New Plough Inn on Leicester Road, a favourite pub of Maureen and her husband Roy, also recently held a quiz night to support the cause, raising £620.
Roy and Maureen’s son and daughter attended the event, who live in Burbage.
Mauren is also survived by four grandchildren.
A car boot sale added another £166 to the pot, with Brookfield Signs and Designs in Burbage providing a banner for the event.
