Charity given a big boost
A PROSTATE cancer charity in Leicestershire received a big donation from the freemasons.
PROSTaid was chosen as the recipient of a £15,000 Community Award from the Freemasons Masonic Charitable Foundation, following an unprecedented public vote.
The charity was one of six nominated by the Freemasons in Leicestershire and Rutland, with people from the region voting to decide the level of their award.
A total of 178,801 people across England and Wales voted in the awards.
The Masonic Charitable Foundation is distributing £3 million to 300 charities across the country, as a major part of its 300th anniversary celebrations.
The public vote decided on the size of the awards, from £4,000 to £25,000.
Norman Bell, friends co-ordinator at PROSTaid, said the money would go towards funding two PROSTaid nurse specialists, one at Leicester General Hospital and the other Leicester Royal Infirmary.
He said: “The grant which we have been awarded following the public vote important.
“We are very grateful to all of our friends who took the time to vote and support us.”
The Masonic Charitable Foundation obtains all its fund from freemasons, and their families and friends.
It is estimated that half of the freemasons’ charitable expenditure, of more than £33 million, goes to charities that help people in communities.
